    Troubled Marcelinho signs with Trabzonspor

    Controversial Brazilian midfielder Marcelinho, notorious for his lack of discipline has signed a three-year contract with Turkish first division side Trabzonspor.

    The transfer follows a five-year spell with Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin marked by the 31-year-old’s erratic behaviour and his failure to join the team on time after his summer vacation.

    Roberto Carlos mulling Turkey move

    Real Madrid fullback Roberto Carlos is poised to sign for Turkish club Fenerbahce on a three-year deal.

    Spanish sports daily Marca reported Saturday that the 33-year-old Brazilian international is ready to sign for the Istanbul outfit in a transfer deal worth 5 million euros, ending his eight year association with Real.

    South Africa international Quinton Fortune believes he can make a success of his new career with Bolton Wanderers and prove Manchester United they were wrong to let him go.

    The 29-year-old midfielder spent seven years at Old Trafford, but saw his spell under Sir Alex Ferguson brought to an end by a long-standing knee injury which caused him to miss the entire 2005/2006 season.

    Parreira installed as South Africa coach for 2010: SAFA chief

    Former Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has agreed a deal to take charge of South Africa as the 2010 World Cup hosts begin their long build-up to the finals, officials said.

    South African Football Association President Molephi Oliphant said Parreira had signed a contract after meeting with a delegation from the southern African nation in Rio de Janeiro.

    Zinedine Zidane has gone from headbutter to headhunted with a Chilean team believing he is the man to knock over their mountain of debt.

    A group of businessmen said Friday they hoped to convince the French icon to play a few minutes in a friendly match with first-division side University of Chile, with takings aimed at settling the club’s dues of 10 million dollars.

    Chelsea in talks for Arsenal star Cole

    Arsenal have held talks with Chelsea over the potential sale of defender Ashley Cole to the English champions, according to the Gunners’ vice-chairman David Dein.

    England star Cole, 25, has been a long-term target for Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, who is keen to land a left-back after selling Asier Del Horno to Valencia earlier this week.

    Fonseca joins Benfica for four years

    Mexican international striker Francisco Fonseca has joined Benfica from Cruz Azul for four years, the Portuguese club said.

    “I am going to try to help the club be the champion of every tournament it takes part in,” the 26-year-old told a Lisbon news conference.

    Headbutt of Zidane spawns chart-topping hit

    A song called “Headbutt” written the day after the World Cup final is set to become the smash hit of the summer in France less than three weeks after its release.

    The track, inspired by France’s star player Zinedine Zidane, who was sent off in the final for headbutting Italy’s Marco Materazzi, was written in 30 minutes by three despondent French fans.

    US forward McBride retires from international football

    Brian McBride, the only US footballer to score in more than one World Cup, announced his retirement from international football.

    McBride’s decision brought an end to a 13-year international career that included appearances in the World Cup in 1998, 2002 and 2006. He produced 30 goals in 95 matches for the United States to become the second-leading scorer in team history.
