    Cole could be sold admits Wenger

    Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has implied for the first time that England left back Ashley Cole could be sold this summer.

    Arsenal insist they have yet to receive a bid from Chelsea but the Gunners would, according to reports, seek a fee of up to 25 million pounds (36.6 million euros) if the Blues did make an approach for the 25-year-old player.

    Maradona taken to hospital for health exam

    Argentina legend Diego Maradona was admitted to a private hospital for several hours for a “complete examination”, his personal doctor has said.

    “Maradona was hospitalized during the night to avoid a media circus,” said Alfredo Cahe.

    Emerson completes Real switch

    Brazil midfielder Emerson was officially unveiled as a Real Madrid player.

    Just a day after his former Juventus teammate Fabio Cannavaro finalised his move to the Spanish giants, Emerson signed a three-year deal.

    “I am very happy to be here,” said Emerson. “It is something I had been thinking about for several years and now it has happened.

    Italian federation given one-day extension to UEFA deadline

    The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has been given an extra day to confirm the list of clubs who will take part in European competitions next season, UEFA has said.

    European football’s governing body said it had agreed to a request from the FIGC that they extend the deadline for providing the final list of Italian teams pending an appeal into the match-fixing scandal that has rocked Serie A.

    Polish football federation accused over World Cup ticket scam

    A Polish prosecutor has accused the country’s football federation of being involved in a scam in which tickets to World Cup matches were sold on the black market.

    “All indications lead us to believe that tickets for World Cup 2006 matches which were sold illegally came from the batch allocated to the Polish federation,” national prosecutor Janusz Kaczmarek was quoted as saying by the Polish media Tuesday.

    Cannavaro the Real deal for two years

    Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro has been officially unveiled as a Real Madrid player.

    The 33-year-old centre-back, who only 16 days ago lifted the World Cup with Italy after a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over France, penned a two-year deal and will wear the number 5 shirt vacated by his opposite number in the World Cup final, the now retired Zinedine Zidane.

    Italian football legend Paolo Maldini has been named as the latest of a string of celebrities to model for Swedish low-cost fashion retailer Hennes and Mauritz (H and M).

    “Maldini is a great masculine role model,” H and M spokeswoman Catarina Midby told AFP on Monday.

    Pfister to sign fresh contract with Togo

    German Otto Pfister will sign a new contract with the Togo football federation to coach the national team until 2008, the SID news agency reported.

    “We have a verbal agreement,” said the veteran trainer who quit the Togo team shortly before their first World Cup finals match last month in frustration over a pay dispute between players and national officials.

    Defending champions back on top of J-League

    Defending champions Gamba Osaka shot to the top of Japan’s J-League with a 5-1 hammering of Nagoya Grampus Eight, overtaking Kawasaki Frontale who lost for the first time in 11 matches.

    Satoshi Yamaguchi netted twice for Gamba while Takahiro Futagawa, Fernandinho and Ryuji Bando were also on target against strugglers Nagoya.
