    Appeals begin in Italian scandal

    The appeals in Italian football’s match-fixing scandal began in a Rome hotel, Italian media reported.

    A sporting tribunal must decide whether to confirm the relegation of Juventus, Fiorentina and Lazio to the second division for their part in influencing which referees were selected for their matches last season.

    Bolo Zenden says competition for midfield places can propel Liverpool to the Premiership title.

    The Dutchman, on his way back after eight months out following ankle surgery, has figured in a central midfield role in Liverpool’s first two pre-season friendlies, a 2-0 victory at Wrexham and Saturday’s 1-0 win at Crewe.

    Lama vows to turn round Kenyan football

    Former France goalkeeper Bernard Lama has vowed to inject professionalism into Kenyan football in his new role as the national team’s coach.

    Lama, 43, will be expected to build a team capable of challenging for a place in the 2008 Africa Nations Cup finals in Ghana and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

      Its a high chance that Kenyans soccer fans should completelly change their attitude towards results of any soccer match our term plays.They should shun away from politics and be ready to accept both negative and positive results from all the matches the team is going to play under coach Lama.We shall go back to where we were in soccer only when the coach will be given the autonomy and freedom to do his work freely.Let us be proud of our National Team HARAMBEE STARS and give it the necessary support it may require.

    Boateng handed Middlesbrough captaincy

    Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate has chosen Dutch midfielder George Boateng as his successor as club captain.

    Southgate was Middlesbrough’s skipper last season but needed a new man to replace him after becoming boss of the English Premiership club this summer.

    “We have received a concrete offer,” general manager Dieter Hoeness said on the eve of the club’s third-round Intertoto Cup return leg match against Moscow FC.

    Arnold to coach Australia in Asian Cup qualifiers

    Graham Arnold has been announced as interim national coach for Australia’s two Asian Cup qualifying matches next month.

    Australia take on Kuwait in Sydney on August 16 and Lebanon in Adelaide on August 31 in their bid to qualify for the finals of the Asian Cup in July next year.

    FIFA defends Materazzi ban

    FIFA have defended their decision to ban Italy defender Marco Materazzi for insulting Zinedine Zidane in the World Cup final.

    Materazzi was handed a two-match suspension and a 3,100-euro fine by a disciplinary committee of football’s world governing body on Friday.
