Giggs is one of our greatest ever says Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed Ryan Giggs as one of Manchester United’s greatest ever players.

Giggs celebrated his Premiership player of the month award by sending United back to the summit after scoring the winner in the 1-0 win over Tottenham at Old Trafford on Saturday.

His 139th career goal in a United career spanning 16 years ensured Ferguson’s side go into Wedneday’s Champions League showdown with Scottish champions Celtic with confidence sky high.

The United manager could not hide his delight as Giggs, who is approaching his 33rd birthday, continued his excellent start by scoring his second of the season.

“Ryan Giggs will go down as one of the greatest players this club has ever had,” said Ferguson.

“We already knew he was good but he is starting to mature and that is why we will do better in Europe this season.”

United, who have a two-point lead at the summit, have the Premiership’s only 100 per cent winning record. Yet they were fortunate to escape unscathed as Tottenham wasted several good chances to secure a point.

Ferguson accepted his side had been fortunate but, with Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes now set to return to action after suspension, the United manager reckons his side can go from strength to strength.

“In the last few years teams that get off to a good start have never stopped,” said Ferguson. “That bodes well for the future.

“This is just the start we wanted. We showed more and more composure as the game went on. Tottenham had chances but so did we.”

Michael Carrick celebrated his Old Trafford debut by silencing the Tottenham boo-boys. Carrick, who moved from Tottenham to United for 18.6 million pounds last month, produced a solid midfield performance to help send his old team to their third defeat in four games.

Tottenham were without their exciting England winger Aaron Lennon. The 19-year-old looks set to miss Thursday’s UEFA Cup first round first leg tie with Slavia Prague after damaging his knee in training.

Manager Martin Jol said the injury could rule Lennon out of action for several weeks.

“We think there could be a problem with his cartilage,” said Jol. “He suffered the injury in training on Friday, but we will know more for sure on Sunday how serious it is.”

Jol refused to blame keeper Paul Robinson for United’s winner. The England keeper could only parry Cristiano Ronaldo’s 35-yard free-kick straight into the path of Giggs who headed home the only goal of the game.

“I told him at half-time maybe he could have punched the ball,” said Jol. “It was a free-kick from a long way out.

“But I have seen it again on video and there was so much swerve on the shot.”
