Keane dreams of stronger Sunderland

Sunderland manager Roy Keane hopes to spare the north-east side’s fans the relegation fears that have dogged them this term by bringing in new players ahead of the next Premier League season.

The former Manchester United and Ireland midfielder has spent much of the current campaign trying to keep his side in the lucrative top-flight.

But the Black Cats are now seven points above the drop zone with six matches of the season remaining after back-to-back wins and a repeat performance away to second-bottom Fulham this weekend would all but assure Sunderland’s safety.

However, just staying in the Premier League is not the summit of Keane’s ambition and with defender Jonny Evans, on loan from United, already set to stay at the Stadium of Light if Sir Alex Ferguson decides he’s no longer needed at Old Trafford, Keane is looking for fresh re-inforcements.

“We want to try to bring in top, top players to the football club,” said Keane. “I know the fans over the last number of years have been left disappointed in terms of getting their hopes up but that’s my job to try to fulfil their dreams.

“To be fair, the priority for us is just to try to make sure we are in the Premier League next year.

“We are having players watched at this moment in time, we are watching players all the time.

“Part of my job is to try to win the next game, but obviously, I have scouts who do their homework – that’s why you employ these people, to share the load.

“We have scouts all over Europe watching certain players and I will let them get on with their job.”

Keane, tipped as Ferguson’s successor when the veteran Scottish boss eventually steps down at Old Trafford, added: “I am enjoying the challenge, yes. I am enjoying the challenge of being manager of Sunderland and making sure we are in the Premier League next year and can build for the next few years.”
