Only World Cup will do says Klinsmann

Klinsmann Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann says anything less than winning next month’s World Cup would be a failure in his eyes.

Hosts Germany are so confident that they have booked hotel rooms for the Berlin final on July 9 and Klinsmann says his target has not changed despite his team looking far from convincing.

“There is only one target and that is to be world champions. You always have to aim for the top,” Klinsmann said at Germany’s training camp in Geneva.

“It is important that this team does not relax and say: ‘If we reach the quarter-finals then that is a success.’ That would be wrong.”

Klinsmann, a World Cup winner with West Germany in 1990, has brought a refreshing attacking attitude to the national team and vowed to put the emphasis on going forward no matter who they play.

“We will not change. Even if we play Brazil we will not sit back,” Klinsmann promised. “We will try to go forward and put the pressure on.”

Germany open the World Cup against Costa Rica on June 9 in Munich before group matches against Ecuador and Poland.

The nation has won the tournament three times with their last success coming on Italian soil in 1990.

At the 2002 World Cup Germany reached the final against all the odds before losing 2-0 to Brazil.
