Pauleta proves PSG’s saviour once again

loufti
Former Portuguese international striker Pedro Pauleta saved ailing French football giants once again on Wednesday as he came off the bench to score the only goal in a 1-0 win and end lower league side Carquefou’s dreams of French Cup glory.

The 34-year-old marksman has been the standout player for the Parisian outfit this season - which hasn’t been hard as they fight against relegation - and his goal gives them hopes of at least achieving a cup double this term, having won the League Cup earlier this season.

Trezeguet boosts Juve’s Champions League hopes

A controversial goal by France international David Trezeguet inspired Juventus to a 3-0 win over relegation-threatened Parma on Wednesday and gave the winners an almost certain place in next season’s Champions League.

Trezeguet’s first goal since March 22 was fortunate as patently offside he prodded the ball home after Mauro Camoranesi’s header had come off the post in the 16th minute and the Frenchman took a while to register the goal had been given.

However the result was virtually ensured when striker partner Raffaelle Palladino lashed in a stunning shot in the 30th minute.

Stielike relieved of running Elephants affairs

Former German international Ulrich Stielike will not have his contract renewed as Ivory Coast coach the national federation announced on Tuesday.

The 53-year-old - who missed out on this year’s African Nations Cup because he returned to Germany to be with his desperately ill son who subsequently died - had had his contract extended at the end of February to April 15, but it has been decided not to renew it.

“At the expiry of this date (April 15) the president of the federation (Jacques Anouma) told the national coach that there would be no further extension,” read a statement from the federation.

Capello gives vote of confidence to Owen

owen

England coach Fabio Capello gave Michael Owen a vote of confidence on Tuesday, singling out the in-form Newcastle United marksman as a key player in his qualification plans for the 2010 World Cup.

Speaking to reporters on a trip to Lesotho, a tiny mountain kingdom which is surrounded by the tournament hosts South Africa, Capello said qualifying for the tournament was never out of his thoughts.

“My main priority is to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. I think about it all the time,” the Italian said, speaking through an interpreter.

PSG’s season of hell set to become fierier

Ailing French football giants Paris Saint Germain have experienced more lows than highs this season save winning the League Cup but on Wednesday it could reach its nadir when they play fifth division side Carquefou in the French Cup quarter-finals.

PSG enter the tie on the back of a demoralising 3-2 defeat to Nice, having surrendered a 2-1 lead in the final three minutes and leaving them in the relegation zone, while Carquefou must be licking their lips in anticipation having seen off the much more in form Marseille last time out in the Cup.

Tomas Rosicky to recover at home from knee injury

rosiky

Czech captain Tomas Rosicky will recover from a recurring knee tendonitis which has made him doubtful for Euro 2008 in his homeland, the player announced on his website on Monday.

“Tomas Rosicky’s rehabiliation, following agreement with Arsenal management, will continue in Prague,” the site said of the Gunners’ midfield star.

Rosicky has been sidelined by a painful inflammation at the back of his knee since the end of January.

His continued absence for club and country prompted Czech football federation chiefs and the team doctor to voice concerns last week over whether the key 27-year-old would be fit for June’s Euro 2008 championships.

Galliani confirms Ronaldinho agreement

ronaldhino

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani confirmed on Sunday that the reigning European champions have come to an agreement with Brazil forward Ronaldinho over a possible summer transfer.

The Barcelona player’s brother and agent Roberto de Assis had said on Saturday that there was a deal in place between player and club and that the only stumbling block was a transfer fee between the Spaniards and the Italians.

“We have a deal in principle with the player,” said Galliani. “We were allowed to speak to the player by Barcelona and now we’re looking to come to an agreement with Barca.”
