An Amazing Game Filled With Tons Of Teeth Clenching Moments! VAMOS ARGENTINA!!!!

From start to finish this game kept m eon my toes! I stayed up all night and left my bb'z at work alone to finish up so I could run home to watch the game and MAN IT WAS WORTH IT (sorry lol)...

It looked like NGA could have had a chance but c'mon, this is Argentina we are talking about! Messi was on his game even with the few misses he had (each one killed me inside but he did a good job)  and Tevez ran it well too! The one downside I felt was at the 89:40 mark when Messi ran the ball and then fell short of the goal. It was a lousy play and it seemed like he was wearing thin  at the end of the game. Still a hell of a game! Those 4min of stoppage time sure did help though. Sorry Super Eagles....it was not your day! Jonas did well also. I was a bit peeved at the removal of Veron but he was not on his game like he normally is....age will do that after a while and I think it's catching up to him....too bad, cause he is a really amazing player.

    1-0 ARGENTINA WINS THIS ONE!!!!

I can't wait to watch England tear the US a new one (sorry ppl but I am no fan of the USA's futbol team - I don't like their style of play and hope they get their ass handed to them today! And of course we all will be glued to the tv come the 16th to watch Korea lose =)

2010 FIFA World Cup Group Stage
    12 June 2010

The South Koreans would start off strong once again in a World Cup with a 2-0 win over Greece on Saturday afternoon in South Africa.

It was a quick start for the Koreans who took a 1-0 lead with a 7th minute goal from Lee Jung-Soo. Greece continues to struggle in World Cups and has not scored in their last four matches (didn’t score in all three group stage matches in 1994).

The match would remain 1-0 until early in the second half when South Korea extended their lead to 2-0. Manchester United’s Park Ji-Sung scored in the 52nd minute to give South Korea a comfortable margin and secure the three points.

Even though South Korea won the first match, it doesn’t guarantee they will make it out of the group stage. In the 2006 World Cup they won their opening match but failed to make it to the next round. Greece will have a tough road to make it to the next round as they will probably need at least 4 points and possibly 6 out of the next two matches.

    Tribes At War.

The World Cup kicked off yesterday at last and on the first day we got to see quite a few Arsenal players in action. Vela started for Mexico and despite having a goal disallowed he didn't really do very much at all in their come from behind 1-1 draw with hosts South Africa. He was substituted after 69 minutes when Blanco came on for him. I heard a pundit on the radio last night say that Blanco looked like Quinten Tarantino in "From Dusk Til Dawn" after he had changed into a vampire and it was a very good comparison.

In the evening game three Arsenal players started for France in a 0-0 draw with Uruguay as Sagna, Gallas and Diaby were all chosen but Clichy will do well to play with Evra ahead of him for the left back slot. Domenech showed his expertise as a manager by leaving out the player who probably could have made a difference for France as Malouda was only used as a late sub. It wasn't a great game  but it leaves the group very evenly balanced after the first round of games. For me no team stands out in this group and any team that can win a game will probably go through.

Today we start off with South Korea against Greece in group B at 12.30 pm Irish time and that is followed by Argentina against Nigeria at 3pm. I don't know how the first game will go but I think if Argentina are as good as some people think they will need to show it against Nigeria. A win for them in that game would almost ensure qualification from the group and take some pressure off the players and their "laid back" manager.

The big game of the day in my opinion though is the England one against the USA and it kicks off at 7.30 pm Irish time. It's an awkward time for me tonight as I have to go to a pub a few miles away for a big night that includes a draw for €60,000 worth of prizes that I have a €100 ticket in. My father in law is on the club committee so I have no choice but I think I will try to drive there at half time and collect the car tomorrow. I can't see past an England victory tonight but I shouldn't write off the Americans.

The Arsenal news is thin on the ground as you would expect with the World Cup underway but Phil Jagielka's name is linked with us yet again. He's a player who could possibly do very well at Arsenal and from what I saw when he was an emergency goalkeeper against us or Sheffield United a few years ago he's probably a better keeper than Almunia. I can't see Everton wanting to sell him though and without their say so there will be no deal.

The boss spoke about always wanting to win silverware and not working to finish second or third and I'm sure he does but he also has to know that we need to strengthen certain areas of the team or all of his work with the players will be in vain. As I've said before we cannot win the league with Almunia in goals or with Silvestre as a backup to our centre backs.

Before I go congratulations to Bradley08 who got both of his predictions right in the first two games of the World Cup and heads my predictor league. There are still 62 games left though and I won't be writing myself off just yet. In the fantasy World Cup game I would imagine that not too many teams have actually had players playing yet and teams will only start to pick up points today with Argentina and England playing. That's the lot just in time for today's games to start.

Here's a look at how Bendtner's season went for Arsenal.

And to finish today's title track from Damian Marley. The World Cup is a little like 32 tribes going to war in a football sense.

    See You Tomorrow.

    Ouch.

Good morning to you, if hangovers were contagious I'd advise you to steer clear even of reading this blog let alone getting anywhere near me, such is the power of the one that has me in its grip this morning. Yesterday I was privileged to be at the wedding of two of my friends, a great day was had by all and I even got a mention in the groom's speech for my bold choice of a bow tie for the occasion. Of course there was plentiful drinking to be done and in retrospect I may have overdone it a little. Beer, wine, tequila and gin all made their way into my system at various stages in inadvisable quantity so it's not surprising that this morning I have a hangover that could be described as a borderline living organism in it's own right.

The start of the World Cup has therefore passed me by a bit. I know that Abou Diaby, William Gallas and Bacary Sagna all saw action in their games yesterday but that's about it. Of course today is England's first game, no Arsenal players to feature there, and not only that but it's also taking up all the news coverage this morning which means there's absolutely nothing happening.

There are one or two bits from yesterday, Lorient have "warned Arsenal off" Laurent Koscielny according the Sky Sports headline, however the actual quote from Lorient chairman Loic Fery is

"We do not need to sell,

We are fortunate to have a solid financial structure."

Which is not the same as telling us to do one. However, if they were to tell us to get lost then I'd hope that we would. We have put ourselves up on a plinth a bit with our stance regarding a certain other club's pursuit of one of our players and we can't very well complain about it if we turn around and do it to other clubs like some horrible slimy food chain. As I say though, Lorient aren't exactly saying bugger off there. They're saying they're under no pressure to sell, and we can infer from that that they'd only sell for what they consider to be the right price. Quite right too.

Celtic are pulling out all the stops to sign Sol Campbell, they've offered him his honeymoon off in July when the club will be involved in a European qualifier. The more I think about this one the more likely it seems, and it makes sense for Sol if what he wants is first team football every week. It's unfortunate because I feel we might miss his contribution, but his opportunities would be limited with us. Don't get me wrong, his departure is not a certainty at the moment, but it looks as though the wind is blowing in that direction.

Arsene Wenger has been very complimentary about Steven Pienaar. The boss has evidently been looking at him for a while as he said:

    "Pienaar has grown this year,"

"He was usually a very busy player where the final ball was missing a little bit, but this year he has gained in personality and he has kept his work-rate, so he has been much more efficient.

"What also played a big role in his growth was that Mikel Arteta was not there for a while and that he had to take the responsibility of being the playmaker of the team.

"He was one of the best players in England this year. He would get into the Arsenal team. I always had an eye on him since he was at Ajax."

High praise indeed, I'm not sure I'd take it as a declaration of interest in signing him necessarily, those quotes have the look of a pundit analysing a game to me, but he's right to highlight how good Pienaar has become. He was impressive in the game against Everton at the Grove, scoring a lovely to boot if I remember correctly. He could be one to watch in the next year or so.

Right, I believe that's about as much as I can manage with the Hangover Beast sitting on my head and stomach so I'm off to talk to the porcelain telephone. Speak to you tomorrow.
