Rivaldo’s Missing!
Started his career at the age of 16 in 1989 with Santa Cruz FC and 4 year later went on to play for first division SC Corinthians, and in the same year debuted for nationalteam against Mexico in a friendly match and scored the winning and the only goal of the match.
He joined Deportivo La Coruña in the Spanish first division, where he stayed only for one season before moving to the Catalan giants FC Barcelona – the transfer fee was an enormous € 24 million. Brazil continued to call him up for their national side. With the national team he won the Copa America in 1997 and participated in the 1998 World Cup. In the successful defence of the Copa America in 1999 Rivaldo earned himself the distinction as top scorer of the tournament with 5 goals, two thereof in the 3-0 victory over Uruguay in the final.
In 1998 and 1999 he won the Spanish league title with Barcelona, In 1999 Rivaldo also won both, the FIFA and the European Footballer of the Year, honors. In 2002 he signed a three-year contract with the Italian Serie A club AC Milan, where by the end of the 2002/03 season he won the Italian Cup and the European Champions League, where he did not play in the final. In 2004 he returned to Europe joining Greek Alpha Ethniki division club Olympiacos where he won with the team the national championship and cup.

So much to say about him, that his exclusion from world cup 2006 squad is hard to digest for fans around the world, to me it comes as a total surprise because once such an extraordinary performer and so famous suddenly nowhere. Many of analysts say this because of his unfair play against Turkey where he faked an injury. I don’t think he’s been out of squad for underperforming or something else but it’s a story never told. Its still a big mystery. At a match interruption, Turkish defender Alpay kicked a ball hard towards Rivaldo and hit his thigh. Rivaldo fell over holding his hands to his face indicating that he was hit there. The referee sent Alpay off. After a video review Rivaldo was fined $4,500 (USD) by FIFA for ’simulating’.
. Rivaldo has been always in critic’s hands whenever Brazil has underperformed or lost any match. I guess the critic’s were taking their job too seriously. When I see at Ronaldo, I feel that he’s fought back only because fans across the world, the coach and his team mates had faith in him which led him comeback after a disastrous 1998 World cup. But in case of Rivaldo only Pele seems to be pushing him for the big game, and I guess practically Brazil Football Federation have forgotten Rivaldo and his talent and potential. Pele says midfielder Rivaldo could still have a role to play in Brazil’s team for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. “There are a number of players in his position but Rivaldo is a very gifted player so if he is fit he can certainly make it, he still has the talent “said Pele, who was in Greece to open new training facilities at Xanthi.
Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari who coached Brazil during 2001 to 2002 knew the deadly stinging combination of Rivaldo and Ronaldo. And during 2002 world cup it was clear how deadly Rivaldo could be. I guess Rivaldo could have played this world cup and could have made the difference. With Ronaldinho maturing enough things could be different, but the way Rivaldo could have helped making the side sharper.
Rivaldo is disturbed about his exclusion and it feels bad when you want to do something important and respectful for your country and you don’t get a chance. Rivaldo told the Brazilian newspaper Diario do Sao Paulo that he was keen to returnto the national team for the 2006 finals. “I wouldn’t mind even being a substitute, I would be very happy if I have the chance to play at least a few minutes in any game.†he said. The fans allover are disturbed and I personally feel Brazil is incomplete without Rivaldo.
