UEFA name Red Cross humanitarian partner for Euro 2008

European football’s governing body UEFA have selected the international Red Cross (ICRC) as their official humanitarian partner for the 2008 European championships in Switzerland and Austria.
The partnership will help finance the ICRC’s work for the victims of landmines in Afghanistan,” the ICRC said in a statement.
“One of the important aspects of this partnership will be a fundraising campaign called Score for the Red Cross,” the statement said.
“Internet users can buy goals for their favourite team to help them win the title of the most charitable team at Euro 2008.”
In addition, UEFA will donate 4,000 euros (5,835 dollars) to the ICRC for each goal scored in regular time during the tournament.
Th ICRC will use the funds to purchase artifical limbs and provide physiotheraphy and professional training services for landmine victims.
UEFA have over the past decade donated more than 4.8 million euros (7m million dollars) to the Red Cross.
